SIXTEEN

“So, what do you know about Paul?” Emi sipped her coffee, eyeing Nalini’s pile of French toast strips liberally doused with maple syrup. Emi had convinced Nalini to join her for a late breakfast at the Student Union cafeteria. To Nalini’s surprise, Emi—who had stayed at the party until the early hours of the morning—showed no ill effects, at least as far as her appetite was concerned.

Nalini shrugged. “Probably as much as you do, I guess.” She smacked Emi’s hand away when Emi attempted to stab a piece of French toast with a fork. “Why do you ask?”

With a glance at her own plate, which was wiped clean, Emi sighed. “I should have got a double serving of the sausage. Maybe I can go back for some.” She looked over her shoulder at the serving counters across the hall. “And definitely more French toast.”

“That’s not an answer.” Nalini grimaced. “Oh my god, Emi, are you interested in Paul?”

“I might be.” Emi reached over to Nalini’s plate again and, this time, Nalini was too slow to react. With a triumphant grin, Emi brought the soggy French toast strip to her mouth. “Oh, this is so good. I really do think I’ll go back and get some more food.” She stood up. “Can I get you anything?”

Nalini shook her head, then eyed her coffee cup. “Well, maybe some more coffee.”

“You got it. I’ll be right back.”

Nalini couldn’t help grinning while she finished the last of her breakfast. Granted, she didn’t know that many people on campus as yet, but the idea of Emi and Paul getting together would never have crossed her mind. She liked Paul, and if it worked out between him and Emi, she’d be happy for both of them.

When Emi returned, bearing two coffees and a plate of French toast, Nalini immediately grabbed a piece. “Why don’t you just ask Paul out?”

“I don’t know.” Emi glared at her, but Nalini got the sense it was more about the food than Paul. “I think I should get to know him better. He seems interesting. I hate to admit it, but after talking to him, I’ve actually started reading this book about string theory. It’s pretty cool stuff.”

Recalling her first conversation with Paul, Nalini smiled. “Interesting is definitely one word that I would use to describe Paul. I think he kind of had a crush on me, until he realized I wasn’t into guys.”

“I’m just not sure about him. I mean, it’s not instant sparks like you and Lauren, with your tongues hanging out every time you see each other. You’re obviously really into each other.”

Nalini’s cheeks flushed. “Is that how it seems to you?”

“You’d have to be blind not to notice.” Emi snorted and attacked her plate, pulling it closer to her and away from Nalini’s reach. “You two seem like you’re the real deal.”

“Hold on. We’re just friends. I’m not really looking for a relationship. Anyway, we were talking about you and Paul, not me. Are you going to ask him out, or do I have to do that for you?”

“I don’t need your help, thanks.
